Your work is a gift

The most valuable work is generous

Work that resonates with me is marked by generosity. That’s art, graphic design, literature, film, a business idea — it doesn’t matter what the category is. The thing that counts is what it gives. The gifts can be emotional, conceptual, fleeting or life-long.

The art is in finding the right gift for the right person.

I think work can go astray when it becomes too self-centred or self-serving. It risks becoming a gift that no-one wants to receive.

This is not to say that you need to give your work away for nothing. When you sell your work, your audience needs to feel it’s more than worth it, no matter how expensive it is. That’s the aim and the challenge.

What are you giving?
