Why the refresh icon is the sign of our times

Lockdown brain

As I watched the coverage of the US election online last weekend, compulsively refreshing the Guardian’s page in an attempt to get the results to come in quicker (it didn’t work, sorry), I realised that the refresh icon is the sign of our times. It represents a pause we don’t want to experience, a kind of limbo. If 2020 is anything it’s that, and for many, it’s been much worse

This was how I felt about lockdown one, it was eerie and unsettling. And it’s something I still feel in lockdown two.

Many people have been very creative and industrious in these pauses, others have found them inhibiting, even debilitating. I’ve been very fortunate, but at times I’ve felt like the person in the image above, a bit lost, waiting for my brain to kick in. Perhaps this is just the time your brain needs to readjust, to process all the weirdness of this year and the insanity of the last four or five. You might just need this downtime to give you the space to think.

So let’s embrace a bit of lockdown brain, give ourselves some time to defrag — it might be refreshing.
