The value of scheduling time to take your mind for a walk

“As an author, I’ve never forgotten how to daydream.”
— Neil Gaiman

There’s a lot of pressure to be productive every second of the day. You know the click-bait titles, trading on the insecurities we have about making the best use of our time. My main gripe with a lot of this content is how joyless it is. Life isn’t about ruthless efficiency, at least the best bits aren’t and that includes creativity.

There’s huge value in carving out half an hour in your day to sit with a notebook. Or go for a stroll. Or just look out the window. These moments are needed if we’re to create anything new because they give the mind some time to idle. Ideas will come.

I’m not saying you should spend all day like this. But schedule it in. Otherwise, it’ll get eaten up with all the other demands on your time including busywork and scrolling social media.

Daydreaming can be surprisingly productive.

“Everything starts as somebody’s daydream.”
— Larry Niven
