How to be consistently creative

It’s really easy and really hard all at the same time. What you need is consistent effort. Sexy right? You need to plug away and keep making, day after day. No one wants to hear that, but it’s absolutely true.

What’s frustrating, especially when starting out, is that what you make will disappoint you. That’s the case if you’re making anything. You’re going to be pretty rubbish at the start. And that’s okay.

And as your skills develop, you’re going to start to become more ambitious, which pretty much means you’ll still be disappointed because your ambition is always likely to outstrip your skill. And that’s okay too because you’re getting better.

It’s important to look back every now and then to see where you’ve come from, even over the course of a year your work can develop a lot. This can really boost morale.

Working consistently, no matter how you feel, has one massive payoff — you get inspiration for free. The romantic notion is that it should happen the other way round—you wait for the muse then your masterpiece pours out of you—this is false, it doesn’t happen. Don’t wait. Just work. It works.

It works because things happen when you work. It forces you to try things, to articulate them, to make connections, to make decisions. When you do those things, things happen and ideas pop. It’s like being an improviser, you put yourself on stage and build on what happens around you.

Stop waiting. Start doing.
